Underpinning across Wollongong

Enquiries come from across the City of Wollongong. Four suburbs have a page because a council instrument or the state's mapping records something specific for each that bears on digging beside a footing.

Where we work

For each suburb we asked the state's soil-landscape map what it returns at five points, the centre and one a short way north, south, east and west, and asked the planning layers about the whole suburb. Five points do not survey every lot. Thirroul returned the Illawarra Escarpment and Gwynneville units, Figtree four different units, Dapto mostly the Shellharbour unit, and Fairy Meadow the Gwynneville unit and the unit named after it. The local plan's heritage map has a conservation area that intersects Thirroul and Figtree, its flood planning area appears in Dapto, and acid sulfate soils classes appear in all four.

One council, four suburb pages

Wollongong is one council area, so one local environmental plan applies to every suburb here. What differs is which mapped land its clauses reach. We have not checked which other planning instruments apply to a given lot, and Shellharbour and Kiama, which have plans of their own, are not covered. The plan was read at the version published on 28 August 2026, and a single lot is looked up with the council.

Suburbs without a page

The rest of the City of Wollongong is covered on the same terms, among them Stanwell Park, Port Kembla, Woonona, Bulli, Corrimal and West Wollongong. Pages were written where a source gave a suburb something specific to say. The others would repeat what the four already tell, and none has been ruled out.
